Today we’d like to introduce you to Cynthia Videau.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
After graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Communication Arts and Business Administration, the journey to finding a job in that chosen field proved to be more difficult than expected. I kept getting rejection emails for the positions I applied for. The reason was always that, ‘I didn’t have enough experience.’ After five years and 30K in student loan debt, I had to think of something. I started working at a fast-food restaurant, and while I was there the opportunity to design a website for my church was presented to me. I didn’t have any prior experience with designing websites other than practicing at home, but I happily agreed and soon after was presented with another opportunity to design more websites for a business development company. It motivated me to turn my talent into a business.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect? Yes! I experienced many setbacks. I didn’t immediately quit my job to pursue entrepreneurship. I used it to supplement my income. Initially, I couldn’t dedicate all my time to my growing business. I struggled to “put myself out there.” I was nervous about being rejected. My mindset towards pursuing new clients was more toxic than embracing the process itself. As technology began to change, I had to learn how to adapt. I’m naturally an introvert and the thought of opening myself up to rejection was intimidating. My biggest setback was not having self-confidence. I wanted more but I was too afraid to go after it. Another setback was financial support. I did not have anyone to help support me financially and my family lived hours from me. I was not sure how to get a business loan and for many years, I financed my business. I learned how challenging it was to grow a business without funding or capital. These struggles made me want to quit entrepreneurship and for a year I took a step back from growing my business.
During that year, I worked and while working all I could think about was how to make my business viable. How could I make my business an asset instead of a burden? As an entrepreneur, this journey doesn’t come without learning curves, frustration, happy and sad days. It’s just a part of the process. The reward is not just making the sale, it’s becoming comfortable with the process so much that making sales is inevitable and predictable. With time, the process always yields its rewards.

What was your favorite childhood memory? As a child, I had a sincere love for the arts. I loved the performing arts. Acting and singing just played a huge role in my life and development as a child. One of my favorite memories was the day my fellow actors and I won the State Trumbauer Theater competition. It was literally the happiest day of my life. Out of everyone in the whole state, we were #1. We were the best in show, the best in makeup, had the best set, and the best actors/actresses. It brought great joy to me because it showed me that using creativity and being genuinely who I wanted to be was worth it. Entrepreneurship has its challenges, but that childhood moment reminds me to leverage my talents and skills and as a tool for prosperity and growth.
